You want to give Claude a task and are wondering whether to open Cowork or Claude Code. The distinction is now less about two separate modes. It mostly depends on whether you want help with general knowledge work or direct work in a software project.
Anthropic is gradually combining Chat and Cowork. In the new experience, you describe the outcome you want. Claude can answer a quick question or take on a multi-step task. Cowork remains the name used in help articles and for features such as scheduled tasks. During the rollout, some accounts still show separate choices.
Claude Code remains distinct. It is Anthropic's development tool for codebases, files, and commands. Both use agentic capabilities, but they give you different ways to work and different controls.
- Claude is a good fit for multi-step research, documents, spreadsheets, and other knowledge work in a conversation.
- Claude Code is designed for software projects. You work with a codebase and can review changes, commands, and test results.
- Cowork tasks run in the cloud by default. Claude Desktop must be open when a task needs access to local files or apps.
Claude and Claude Code Compared
This table focuses on the practical differences. Available features can vary by account, plan, and surface.
| Feature | Claude | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow | ||
| Typical task | Multi-step research and knowledge work | Software development in a code project |
| Where you start | A Claude conversation; Cowork remains the feature name | A code project in the terminal, an IDE, or another supported surface |
| Execution | Cloud is the default for new Cowork tasks | Depends on the selected surface and setup |
| Access | ||
| Local files | A connected folder through Claude Desktop while the app is open | Project and additional working directories under the configured permissions |
| Code and commands | Can run code as part of a task | Designed for code edits, commands, and development tools |
| Outputs | ||
| Typical outputs | Research, reports, spreadsheets, and presentations | Project changes, command output, and test results |
| Context | ||
| Context across sessions | Claude Memory, when enabled, and Projects for chat and cloud tasks | CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md files and auto memory |
Use Claude for Tasks That Need an Outcome
Claude in a conversation is a good fit when you want to describe a goal and let Claude handle the steps. That could mean research, a report, a spreadsheet with formulas, or a presentation. You do not have to decide up front whether you need a quick answer or a larger project. In the new interface, Claude can choose the right kind of work.
Connected apps such as Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365, or Slack can also be part of a task if you have connected them to Claude. Projects bring together files, links, instructions, and memory for related work. For recurring work, Claude offers scheduled tasks that can run in the cloud.
This is useful when you mainly need to bring files and information together. If a cloud task needs a file on your computer, Claude Desktop must be open. You choose which folder Claude can access. Without that connection, Claude cannot browse your entire drive.
Use Claude Code to Work on a Codebase
Claude Code is a better fit when the task starts with a software project and ends with a change to it. Claude can read and edit project files, run commands, and work with development tools. You can start in a terminal, a supported IDE, or another Claude Code surface.
The difference shows up in the decisions you need to make along the way. For a code change, you often want to see which files are affected, review a plan, approve individual commands, and run tests. Claude Code supports fine-grained permissions for those actions. The exact rules depend on your setup and the surface you use.
For project context, you can add instructions in CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md. Claude Code can also use auto memory for recurring preferences and project patterns. This is different from Claude Memory, which cloud tasks and chat share when memory is enabled.
You do not have to do every coding task in a terminal. Claude Code is also available in the desktop app, on the web, and as an IDE extension. If local files matter, check the specific surface and where the task runs. The product name alone does not tell you that.
One Example, Two Good Ways to Work
Imagine you want to summarize customer interviews in a folder. Claude can read the files, identify recurring themes, and prepare a report or spreadsheet. If the files are on your computer, connect the folder in Claude Desktop and leave the app open.
If you want to change a feature on your website instead, start Claude Code in the relevant project. Claude can inspect the affected files, propose a change, and run commands or tests after you approve them. The result is not just an explanation. It is a reviewable change to the codebase.
Some work needs both steps. You can ask Claude to research a topic or draft a specification, then pass the relevant requirements to Claude Code. For a reliable handoff, make sure the coding task itself includes the requirements that matter.
Where Your Data Is Processed
Claude Cowork runs by default in an isolated cloud environment on Anthropic infrastructure. When a cloud task needs local files, Claude Desktop provides the needed files to the task. The originals stay on your computer. The necessary copies and their contents are processed in the cloud on Anthropic servers.
Since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max plans run in the cloud. Tasks that were started locally before then remain local and can be completed there. New scheduled Cowork tasks also run in the cloud. The exact options on web, desktop, mobile, and Team or Enterprise plans differ.
Claude Code is available on several surfaces too. In terminal and IDE workflows, it works with the configured codebase and asks for permission as needed before running commands or changing files. Claude Code also has web and cloud surfaces. Compare the actual setup rather than relying on the product name. Check where the session runs, what files it can access, and which approvals it needs.
A sandbox or permission prompt does not replace checking the result. Before sending a message, changing important files, or using code in production, review the plan and proposed changes yourself.
Which Option Fits Your Work?
- Choose Claude in a conversation for research, summaries, presentations, spreadsheets, and multi-step office work.
- Choose Claude Code when you need changes to a codebase, commands, or development tools.
- Check the surface first when local data or a specific organizational setup matters. Cloud processing and access to local files are separate things.
- Use both in sequence when research and implementation belong together. Pass the requirements that matter explicitly when you switch.
You do not need a universal winner. Claude is often the simpler place to start for a report. Claude Code is the more focused workspace for changing software.
