Frequently asked questions about Codex Skills

What a skill is, how to use it, and what this directory contains

A Codex skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file. It contains the name, a concise description, and instructions for a repeatable workflow. Depending on the task, it can also include scripts, references, or templates.

In Codex, you can browse skills with /skills and mention one explicitly with $skill-name. Codex can also choose a skill when the task description matches its scope. For repository skills, Codex scans .agents/skills between your working directory and the repository root.

No. This directory lists individual skills with a verifiable SKILL.md source. A plugin can bundle skills and optionally an MCP configuration, but plugins and MCP servers are separate artifacts and are not counted here as skills.

AGENTS.md holds instructions for a project or folder. A skill describes a reusable workflow for a defined task. Both can work together. AGENTS.md provides the project context while a skill provides the procedure for a specific job.

No. SKILL.md is an open format, but available tools, paths, and permissions can differ between hosts. This directory therefore lists only skills curated specifically for Codex. Read the source before adapting a skill from another environment.

Read the SKILL.md and check which commands, files, or external services it requires. Displayed GitHub stars measure repository popularity, not the quality or safety of one particular skill. The source view and pinned revision let you inspect the exact content.
