Understand providers and their relationships

Start with what providers do and how they are connected. Then compare capital, ownership, and regions, or search the directory directly.

How the AI industry fits together

Your AI tool is the visible end of a longer chain. Behind it sit model providers, data centers, chips, and data and testing services. A company can perform several of these tasks.
Chips

Processors and accelerators perform the calculations. Hardware is a different layer from the model or app.

Example NVIDIA
Compute

Cloud and data-center providers supply systems for training and inference. Inference means running a trained model to produce an answer.

Example CoreWeave
Models

Labs develop models that process language, images, or other inputs. The same model can appear in several applications.

Example Google DeepMind
Data and development services

Datasets, evaluation, and safety testing support development and operation. These services work across several layers.

Example Scale AI
Applications

This is where you use AI for a specific task, such as software development. The application and an embedded model can have different providers.

Example Cursor

Capital connects these layers without being another technical layer. The directory’s open-weights category is not a separate layer either. It describes how model weights are made available. Each license determines how you may use them.

What this means for your choice

  • When choosing a tool, check the application and model separately. A product name alone does not tell you which model processes your request.
  • When assessing dependencies, separate ownership, capital, and compute contracts. A cloud partnership alone does not make a lab a subsidiary.
  • For privacy, check the terms of the specific product. Headquarters, investors, and group membership do not establish a processing location.

Who is connected to whom

This selection connects specific directory entries with their investors, owners, and partners. Each relationship has its own source and reference date. Other relationships can exist without being recorded here.

Frequently asked questions about the AI landscape

Ownership, capital flows, and Europe’s place on this map.

The directory does not produce a single overall leader. Model labs, chip suppliers, cloud operators, and applications serve different roles. Revenue, market value, private valuation, and computing capacity also measure different things. Compare companies within the same role and metric, and keep each valuation’s reference date.

The OpenAI Foundation controls OpenAI Group PBC and appoints its board. The published 26% foundation, 27% Microsoft, and 47% employees and investors split refers to the recapitalization closing on October 28, 2025. The March 31, 2026 round closed with $122B in committed capital at an $852B valuation. After the final October 1, 2026 tranche, SoftBank reports $64.6B invested cumulatively and an approximately 13% stake. This does not establish a complete current ownership register.

The companies have not fully disclosed their investment motives. Google participated in Anthropic's 2023 Series C; the announcement does not state an amount. Google Cloud is also expanding TPU capacity for Anthropic. Amazon announced commitments of up to $33B for its collaboration: $8B invested previously, another $5B, and up to $20B in the future. That possible total has not all been paid. These partnerships connect equity stakes with cloud business and compute capacity. Anthropic's separate purchases from AWS, Azure, and Google for compute are spending, not investments by those providers.

Since February 2, 2026, xAI has been a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX. It continues to exist as a subsidiary, but is no longer independently owned. SpaceX's current SEC filing describes xAI as part of its AI segment.

Stanford reports approximately $20.92B in private AI investment in Europe in 2025, compared with $285.88B in the United States. Europe has its own labs, applications, and infrastructure, including Mistral, Black Forest Labs, DeepL, ASML, SAP, and OVHcloud. A company’s headquarters establishes neither where it buys compute nor where customer data is processed.

Valuation and regional investment figures come from the shared datasets used for AI statistics. Each selected valuation has its own reference date and source link. Each displayed capital relationship has its own review date; the records used here were last checked on October 9, 2026. The ownership pie is explicitly a historical 2025 snapshot. Directory sources and review dates apply to each individual entry rather than automatically to the whole catalog.
