ChatGPT Plans: Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business & Enterprise

Six plans, wildly different limits, and pricing details buried in the fine print. Choosing the right ChatGPT plan is more confusing than it should be.

The Information reports that over 50 million users have already subscribed to a paid ChatGPT plan. But which plan is actually worth the money?

I've dug through all available information, cross-referenced it with the official ChatGPT pricing page, and tested each plan myself. In this article, you'll learn everything you need to know about current ChatGPT prices, which plan fits your use case, and what my personal experience has been.

ChatGPT Free

ChatGPT has offered a free version since its launch in November 2022. This has been available without registration since April 2024.

Free users get advanced reasoning with GPT-5. However, messages, file uploads, Deep Research queries and context are quickly limited. Once a limit is reached, ChatGPT automatically falls back to smaller models or resumes usage after a waiting period.

The GPT Store is available to discover and use GPTs, but you cannot create your own GPTs or tasks on the Free plan. Web browsing and data analysis work but remain significantly more throttled than on paid plans.

Image and video generation is only available with restrictions: standard image outputs run slower, and Sora 1 is not available on the Free plan at all. Deep Research, memory features and Advanced Voice are present but clearly limited.

ChatGPT Free has noticeably improved in recent months but remains an offering for occasional use. Anyone who wants to work productively with ChatGPT on a regular basis will quickly hit the limits and should plan for Plus or higher, or switch to free alternatives like Microsoft Copilot, Claude or Google Gemini.

ChatGPT Go

ChatGPT Go is OpenAI's new budget plan at $8 per month. It targets users who want more than the free version but don't need the full scope of Plus.

Go offers unlimited access to GPT-5.2 Instant (the fast standard model) with significantly higher limits than the Free plan: roughly 10x more messages, file uploads and image generation with DALL-E. Extended data analysis (Python-based) is also included.

Not included are GPT-5 Thinking, Deep Research, Sora, custom GPTs, tasks, ChatGPT Agent and Codex Agent. These features remain reserved for Plus and higher tiers.

Important: ChatGPT Go is ad-supported. OpenAI is testing contextual ads in the chat to subsidize the low price. The Go plan has been available in 98 countries since January 2026, including the EU.

ChatGPT Plus

ChatGPT Plus is ChatGPT's standard paid plan and currently costs $20 per user per month.

You get extended access to GPT-5 with significantly fewer restrictions on messages, file uploads, data analyses and image generation. Standard and advanced audio mode including video and screen sharing are included, practical for live demos or spontaneous meetings.

Particularly exciting are the new productivity features: You can define your own tasks, create and share custom GPTs, access ChatGPT Agent and Codex Agent, and get a preview of Sora 1 for limited video generation. Canvas, Advanced Data Analysis, Deep Research and Vision are also part of the package.

Limits still exist, but they're significantly higher than on the Free plan. OpenAI regularly adjusts quotas. In our experience, Plus is sufficient for intensive knowledge work, coding projects and content production.

By default, your chats may be used to improve the models. However, you can still disable the use of your content via "Data Controls":

ChatGPT Pro

ChatGPT Pro is the premium plan for power users and costs $200 per month.

Pro is aimed at power users, developers, researchers and anyone who uses ChatGPT intensively and doesn't want any limits.

The most important features of ChatGPT Pro:

• Unlimited access to GPT-5 and GPT-5 Pro (no waiting times or hard message limits)
• Highest quotas for GPT-5 Thinking, Deep Research and Advanced Data Analysis
• Unlimited advanced audio and video mode with higher limits for screen sharing
• Extended access to ChatGPT Agent, Codex Agent, tasks and custom GPTs
• Extended access to Sora 1 for experimental video generation

For anyone running daily Deep Research sessions, long coding sessions or complex analyses, this eliminates the need to manually purchase additional credits. If you don't need the extra limits, Plus or Business is more cost-effective.

ChatGPT Business

ChatGPT Business is OpenAI's team plan and costs $25 per user per month with annual billing or $30 with monthly billing (minimum: 2 users).

Important: Non-profit organizations receive a 20% discount. OpenAI currently quotes $20 (annual) or $24 (monthly) per user.

In addition to Plus, Business provides:

• Unlimited GPT-5 messages plus generous access to GPT-5 Thinking and GPT-5 Pro
• Privacy by default: Chats are not used for training by default
• Secure workspace with admin controls, SAML SSO, MFA and compliance (CSA STAR, SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001/17/18/27701)
• Connectors to Google Drive, SharePoint, GitHub, Notion and other business apps
• Business features like data analysis, recording mode, Canvas, shared projects, tasks and workspace GPTs
• Access to Codex and ChatGPT Agent for automations in documents, tools and codebases

If needed, you can purchase additional credits to further boost GPT-5 Thinking, GPT-5 Pro or Deep Research quotas.

We've been using the Business plan (formerly "Team") for some time in our daily work. The combination of data privacy, admin controls and high limits justifies the premium over Plus.

The only downside: Chats still cannot be automatically shared across the entire workspace. This only works via projects, tasks or custom GPTs.

ChatGPT Enterprise

ChatGPT Enterprise is the paid plan for large companies with custom pricing. Prices are negotiated directly with the OpenAI sales team.

Enterprise offers in addition to the Business plan:

• Everything from Business plus extended context window for longer inputs and larger files
• Enterprise security: SCIM, Enterprise Key Management, domain verification, role-based access controls and user analytics
• Custom data privacy policies: Customizable retention periods, encryption at rest and in transit, no training usage
• Data residency in seven regions to meet compliance requirements
• 24/7 Priority Support with SLAs, AI Advisors and dedicated contacts
• Scaling & billing: Volume discounts, invoicing, ACH and support for unlimited users

Enterprise customers can precisely define who has access to chats, how long conversations are stored and which data is exported, centrally managed via domain verification and roles.

Enterprise also supports regional data storage, invoicing and volume discounts, ideal for complex procurement processes.

Conclusion

Choosing the right ChatGPT plan depends heavily on your individual needs:

• ChatGPT Free is suitable for occasional users who can live with limited GPT-5 quotas, restricted image generation and limited Deep Research queries.
• ChatGPT Go ($8/month) is the budget option for users who want unlimited GPT-5 Instant access, more uploads and data analysis, but don't need Thinking, Deep Research, custom GPTs or agents. Note: Go is ad-supported.
• ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) is the best all-rounder for individuals: extended GPT-5 access, audio and video mode, ChatGPT Agent, tasks, custom GPTs and a limited Sora preview.
• ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) is worthwhile for power users who need maximum quotas, GPT-5 Pro, unlimited audio/video mode and extended access to ChatGPT Agent & Sora 1.
• ChatGPT Business ($25/month annually, $30 monthly) is ideal for teams of two or more who need unlimited GPT-5 messages, connectors, admin controls and privacy by default. Non-profits get a 20% discount.
• ChatGPT Enterprise (price on request) is aimed at large companies with requirements for data residency, enterprise security, custom retention policies and 24/7 priority support.
