Perhaps you've heard about the major shake-up that hit the Instagram creator scene in mid-April 2023:
There was a cease-and-desist letter because music was used without the creator having the necessary license. And the sums involved were sometimes as high as $25,000.
Wouldn't it be a dream if you could create cool sounds with just a few clicks that match your topic and don't require worrying about licenses?
If you're thinking that AI is the perfect solution to this, we have to (at least partially) disappoint you.
Unlike AI image generators or AI text generators, you still need to read the license terms carefully with music generators and look closely at what price you need to pay to get which rights.
Nevertheless, AI music generators can offer a good alternative to traditional music libraries. The market is growing rapidly and more providers are entering the market with exciting features. In this article, we introduce the eleven best and most popular tools.
- ElevenLabs Music (August 2025) offers the best audio quality on the market with professional 48-kHz output and legally secured licenses from $5 monthly
- Mubert impresses with prompt input and over 80 genres but has more restrictive license terms from $11.69 monthly
- All 11 tools offer free trial versions, but commercial use requires paid subscriptions and careful attention to license terms
1. What is an AI Music Generator?
An AI music generator (also called "AI Sound Generator") is an online tool or software that can create music pieces, jingles, and melodies using artificial intelligence.
The input you can provide and the parameters you can set vary from tool to tool.
1.1 How Good Are AI Music Generators?
AI music generators have become so good that with some pieces you can no longer tell whether they were composed by a human or an AI. More and more music producers are incorporating such tools into their creative process.
However, this depends heavily on the underlying model. Additionally, not every tool offers such high-quality output.
Creating prompts (text commands) for music pieces is also sometimes a bit trickier than with AI text generators or AI image generators.
Nevertheless, many of these tools allow even beginners to achieve quite good results in just a few steps, which is truly impressive.
1.2 AI Music Generators & Licenses
If you've already looked into AI music generators, you may have noticed that licensing and copyright are (unfortunately) much more restrictive than with AI texts or AI images.
Often, the copyright remains with the platform through which the music piece was generated. As a user, you only get limited usage rights that are more or less restricted depending on the tool and chosen subscription.
With all AI music tools we tested, it's forbidden to market the music. So you cannot upload it to Spotify or Apple Music.
The use of music in videos that are only meant to accompany a music piece is also not allowed on some platforms. This includes videos with still images and meditation videos.
Whether music can also be used for sponsored or advertising videos should also be checked beforehand, as AI music tools handle this very differently.

3. Test Results in Detail
For ranking the AI music generators, we looked at many different criteria, such as music quality, musical variety, usability, value for money, and how restrictive or generous the licenses are.
Below you'll find all AI music tools sorted by their test results:
3.1 ElevenLabs Music

ElevenLabs Music is the newest star in the sky of AI music generators. What makes this tool special? The exceptional audio quality and fully licensed commercial usage rights.
In August 2025, ElevenLabs launched its Music feature based on exclusive partnerships with the Merlin Network and Kobalt Music Group. This makes it the only platform offering legally sound, commercial music generation.
The operation couldn't be simpler:
You enter a text prompt, e.g., "A nostalgic lo-fi track for a rainy evening," and ElevenLabs generates a fully produced and mastered music piece within seconds. The quality is at professional 48 kHz.
The vocal synthesis is particularly impressive. The generated singing voices sound so realistic that you can barely distinguish them from real singers. No wonder, after all, ElevenLabs originally became known as the market leader for AI voice generation.
Unlike many competitors, the generated tracks are fully licensed for commercial use through partnerships with major music label networks. So you can use them without worry in videos, podcasts, games, and advertising.
However, there are restrictions. Publishing on music streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon Music is not allowed even with a paid subscription (similar to most other AI music generators).
The only weak point:
The automatically generated lyrics sometimes seem generic and uninspired. The user interface for entering your own lyrics is also not as mature as with established competitors like Suno or Udio.
ElevenLabs Music offers several pricing options:
- The free version allows 11 minutes of music output per month but is only usable for non-commercial purposes.
- The Starter plan costs $5 per month and offers 30 minutes of output with limited commercial rights.
- For serious content creators, the Creator plan for $22 monthly ($11 in the first month) is recommended, which grants full commercial usage rights for videos, social media, and advertising.
- The Pro plan for $99 per month is aimed at professional users with high demand.
3.2 Mubert

Mubert is the AI music generator with the best music quality and currently the only generator where you can also enter a prompt (command) to have a music piece composed.
This didn't work so well in May 2023 when we first tested Mubert, but it's getting better and better now. Similar to ChatGPT, you need to experiment a bit with the prompts to get the desired result.

Alternatively, you can select a genre, mood, or activities. Mubert offers a huge selection here. There are music pieces in 80 different genres:

Unfortunately, you can't make any further changes after creating the song with Mubert. If you don't like the piece, you can't adjust it but have to generate a new piece.
However, you'll be suggested some similar tracks that you can download directly:

3.3 ecrett music
Ecrett is the tool in our AI music generator comparison that scores best in terms of licenses, as it offers a very generous license at a small price while making music creation easy with many customization options.
Music pieces you create at ecrett can be used for all your social media and YouTube projects for $4.99 monthly (as an annual subscription) – including monetized ones. However, the license only applies to you personally; if you have a company, you need the Business subscription, which costs $10 more per month.
The interface for creating music is clear and still offers many possibilities:

First, you select scene, mood, and genre in the window at the top left. A piece is then created from this, which you can customize afterward.
At the bottom, you can see the different sections of the music piece and the various components. Here you can customize everything.
Once you're satisfied, you can save, download, rename, or delete the piece entirely in the window at the top right.
3.4 Soundful
Soundful also offers many options to create songs according to your needs and then customize them.
For currently only $2.50 per month (as an annual subscription), you can use the songs for social media, online platforms, your own websites, and also for advertising.
To create a song, you first select a genre and then a subcategory. You can then adjust the tempo and key.

An advantage of Soundful over ecrett is that you can purchase the copyright for a song for $49.99 if needed. If you do this, you can use the song without subscribing and also have the right to upload and market this song on music platforms yourself.
3.5 Suno
Suno uses a text-to-audio model that generates realistic and multilingual songs. By entering a text prompt, such as "A happy pop song about summer vacation at the beach," Suno AI creates a complete song with lyrics, melody, and instrumentation within 20 to 40 seconds.

If you want, you can also provide more detailed information such as lyrics, style of music, etc. The "Write with Suno" feature was particularly fun to test. The created lyrics are definitely not perfect but give good ideas and can easily be modified as text.

You can already test Suno extensively for free. With 50 credits per day, this is a real free version. For commercial use of sounds and songs, you need to subscribe to the Pro plan for $10 per month.

3.6 Boomy
Boomy costs $9.99 per month in the Creator subscription. However, it's not quite as easy to personalize and modify a song according to your wishes with Boomy.
To create a song, you first select a category at Boomy:

And then choose a subcategory:

Now the song is already created. Afterward, you can swap or move the song sections or select and deselect various instruments. It's also possible to add background sounds like bird chirping.

Overall, however, the editing is not quite as intuitive as with Ecrett or Soundful.
Songs created with Boomy can also be used for advertising and sponsored videos.
3.7 Beatoven.ai
Beatoven is particularly interesting because you can do a lot with the free version. However, downloads are only available with a subscription. For $30 per year, you can download 15 minutes of music per month.
At Beatoven, you also first select a genre:

And then set the mood:

Now the song is created and afterward you can still adjust the tempo and instruments.

3.8 Soundraw
Soundraw is the most expensive AI music generator in the comparison: You pay over $16 per month if you choose the annual plan.
However, Soundraw offers a clear platform and a very generous license: Once you have a subscription, you can use the songs for all applications as long as the music itself is not the product.
To create a song, you also first select a mood at Soundraw and set the length and tempo:

Afterward, SOUNDRAW composes several pieces that match these parameters, and you can make adjustments to the individual pieces:

3.9 Udio
Udio is one of the few tools that generates music based on simple text inputs, i.e., text-to-music. Users can simply enter a text command to have a music piece created.

Users can specify genre, lyrics, and styles to create individual music pieces. You can have lyrics created or write them yourself.

The platform offers both free and paid subscriptions, with paying subscribers able to use advanced features like audio inpainting.

3.10 AIVA
With AIVA, you can generate music that you can then use for videos on social networks like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook. If you want to use the music outside these platforms, you need to subscribe to the Pro plan, which costs $33 monthly (annual subscription).
In the Standard subscription for $11 monthly (annual subscription), you can download 15 tracks per month and the copyright remains with AIVA. In the Pro plan, you can download 300 tracks per month and also become the copyright owner.
To create a song at AIVA, you first select a preset:

You can also set the length, instruments, and tempo:

Once the song is created, you have the option to adjust and modify it in the Piano Roll:

3.11 Evoke Music
Evoke Music is not a classic music generator but a library where music pieces generated using AI are made available.

Here you'll find pre-composed pieces that you cannot customize afterward.
4. What Makes a Good AI Music Generator?
4.1 Generous Licenses
As mentioned above, music is unfortunately much more difficult than AI-generated images. All platforms where you can artificially create music usually retain the copyright to the generated music, and only on a few platforms is there even the option to purchase this.
Why?
The platforms want to avoid the generated music being monetized as such and being downloaded on the internet.
Although the license terms mention wanting to protect the user (so that not everyone can just use the created sounds), ultimately it's probably more about not losing control over the created sounds themselves.
Since the copyright remains with the platform, it's extremely important to inform yourself well about what you can actually do with the downloaded music pieces.
We haven't found a platform that allows using music pieces for commercial projects without a subscription or during the free trial period. So if you're an influencer, blogger, or content creator and not only friends can access your profiles, you'll inevitably need to subscribe so you can use the music publicly.
There are still differences in what context you can use these music pieces:
With providers with generous licenses, you can use the music for many applications. With providers with restrictive licenses, certain areas are excluded and only covered with a more expensive subscription (often involving whether a video should be monetized).
So think carefully beforehand about what you want to use the music for and then choose a provider that covers exactly these areas.
4.2 Easy to Use
The usability of AI music generators is also a major factor in our ranking. At first glance, you can see that there are big differences here across the various platforms.
The platforms ranked best here are those where you can not only create a melody on a specific theme quite easily but can then also modify and adjust it later with little effort.
