What is a System Prompt?
A system prompt is an invisible base instruction that fundamentally controls the behavior of an AI model. It's loaded before every conversation and defines the role, tone, capabilities, and limitations of the assistant.
When you talk to ChatGPT, you don't see the system prompt – but it's always there. It determines why ChatGPT responds politely, introduces itself as "an AI assistant from OpenAI," and refuses certain requests.
Structure of a System Prompt
A typical system prompt contains:
- Role Definition: "You are a helpful assistant..."
- Behavioral Rules: How the model should respond to certain requests
- Tonality: Formal, friendly, factual, humorous
- Constraints: What the model must not do
- Knowledge Context: Additional information about the application
System Prompts at Different Providers
OpenAI (ChatGPT)
OpenAI's system prompt for ChatGPT contains instructions about helpfulness, safety, and how to obtain current information via web search or data analysis. Custom GPTs have additional system prompts that define their specific behavior.
Anthropic (Claude)
Claude is trained with "Constitutional AI" – a set of rules anchored in the system prompt. Claude identifies itself as "Claude" and follows ethical guidelines developed by Anthropic.
Google (Gemini)
Gemini has built-in safety filters and a system prompt that enables integration with Google services. With Gemini Advanced, users can add their own system instructions.
Creating Your Own System Prompts
When using the API, you can define your own system prompts. This is powerful for custom applications:
- Customer Service Bot: "You are the support assistant for [Company]. Respond friendly and refer complex inquiries to human support."
- Code Assistant: "You are a senior developer. Explain code concepts clearly and prefer modern best practices."
- Writing Assistant: "You help write marketing copy. Use active voice and keep sentences short."
Best Practices for System Prompts
- Be specific: Vague instructions lead to inconsistent behavior
- Prioritize: List the most important rules first
- Test thoroughly: System prompts can have unexpected side effects
- Iterate: Refine based on real user interactions

Security Aspects
System prompts are an important security mechanism, but not unbreakable. Prompt injection attacks try to bypass or read the system prompt. Therefore, system prompts should not contain sensitive information.
Conclusion
The system prompt is the foundation of every AI application. It defines who the assistant is and how it behaves. When developing your own AI products, a well-thought-out system prompt is crucial for a consistent and secure user experience.
